Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group

Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group is an artist collective formed in 2005 in Tokyo with members Ryuta Ushiro, Yasutaka Hayashi, Ellie, Masataka Okada, Motomu Inaoka, and Toshinori Mizuno.
Known for their projects that stand as social interventions, the collective has participated in exhibitions throughout the world and developed various independent initiatives.
They have held solo exhibitions at a range of institutions including the Mori Art Museum, Dallas Contemporary, MoMA PS1, and Saatchi Gallery, and have participated in various art festivals such as the Asian Art Biennale, Manchester International Festival, Alkantara Festival, Biennale of Sydney, Busan Biennale, São Paulo Biennial, Shanghai Biennale, and Biennale de Lyon. Their works are held in collections at institutions such as the Centre Pompidou (France), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (US), Hammer Museum (US), M+ (Hong Kong), and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (Japan).
They have also initiated various independent projects, including Don’t Follow the Wind, an exhibition launched in 2015 inside the nuclear exclusion zone created in Fukushima after March 11, 2011; Garter, an artist-run space showcasing works by local contemporary artists; and KANE-ZANMAI, a pop-up started in 2014 that sells humorous and nonsensical “products” and “artworks” that challenge the notion of use value.
The collective’s members also run spaces on their own, such as White House, an experimental art space in Shinjuku; Leggy_, a plant project specializing in succulents and tuberous-rooted plants; and Alternative Space CORE, a multifunctioning art space in Hiroshima.
The collective has also published over a dozen publications, and received the Prudential Eye Awards for Best Emerging Artist of the Year in 2015.
In April 2022, they changed their name from Chim↑Pom to Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group.
